Don’t be late for class at Stern!

This is a post from Steve Green, my guest blogger, a fellow admissions consultant, and a professor here in Tokyo.

Don’t be late for class at Stern!

If you think it is okay to show up an hour after a class has started and would be offended by a professor who told you to leave, then you probably don’t want to enroll in Professor Scott Galloway’s classes at Stern (or, I suspect, in most other professors’ courses at any MBA program.)

A Stern student was an hour late for the first meeting of Galloway’s class recently.  Prof. Galloway told the student to leave and come to the next class, which prompted the student to write him an email and the exchange between them has gone viral.

Whatever you may think of either the student’s or the professor’s attitude here, or of how this issue became public, it is a good reminder that when you enter an MBA program you may be a student, but you are still expected to act like a professional.

Scott Galloway’s email response is a sharp reminder of that fact and he notes (Please note that “xxxx” refers to the student’s name which has not been made public)

there is a baseline level of decorum (i.e., manners) that we expect of grown men and women who the admissions department have deemed tomorrow's business leaders

Getting a good job, working long hours, keeping your skills relevant, navigating the politics of an organization, finding a live/work balance...these are all really hard, xxxx. In contrast, respecting institutions, having manners, demonstrating a level of humility...these are all (relatively) easy. Get the easy stuff right xxxx. In and of themselves they will not make you successful. However, not possessing them will hold you back and you will not achieve your potential which, by virtue of you being admitted to Stern, you must have in spades.
